Carmel is a Manchester based composer and performer
whose work spans classical and electronic genres.
She has written for RLPO, BBC Proms, Manchester
Camerata, Laura Bowler, Birmingham Contemporary
Music Group, Das Neue Ensemble, Galvanize Ensemble,
Equilibrium Quartet and more. She releases
electronic music with PRAH recordings under her
own name.
She was a 2021 recipient of the Jerwood Live Art
Award, a 2020 nominee for the Ivor Novello Rising
Star Award and a 2019 recipient of the Rushworth
Composing Prize with the Liverpool Philharmonic
Orchestra.
As well as writing for herself and classical
ensembles, Carmel often works as a composer and
sound designer in theatre context. Previously she's
worked at Shakespeares Globe, The Royal Exchange,
Plains Plough Roundabout, Shoreditch Town Hall,
Junges Ensemble Stuttgart and more.
She performs with her own band under her own name
as well as with other artists. Carmel is currently
performing on keys, vox and guitar with She Drew the
Gun and Marco Woolf. She is also part of a duo with
composer adn saxophonist Andy Scott. She has
previously performed as part of Bunny Hoova and
Nwando Ebizie's bands as well as having previously
toured as a supporting musician with New Order.
Carmel was mentored by Anna Meredith after being nominated for an Ivor Novello in 2020. Prior to that she studied composition with Gary Carpenter at the RNCM in Manchester, and is now an associate member of the college. Outside of electronic music she has written concert hall commissions for ensembles including Liverpool Philharmonic, Manchester Camerata, Laura Bowler, Birmingham Contemporary Music Group, Das Neue Ensemble, Galvanize Ensemble, Equilibrium Quartet and more.
Carmel is also one half of Bothy, a group looking to create sustainable working and rehearsal spaces for musicians in Manchester. (Please do get in touch if you would like to know more. Musicians / space owners / developers / anyone who’s interested.)
