Carmel is a Manchester based composer working predominantly within electronic DIY, classical and theatre music. She released her debut EP We Get What We Get and We Don’t Get Upset in 2022 with PRAH recordings. She was a 2021 recipient of the Jerwood Live Art Award, a 2020 nominee for the Ivor Novello Rising Star Award and a 2019 recipient of the Rushworth Composing Prize with the Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra.
She has performed her own music on Elizabeth Alker’s Northern Drift Radio 3 show in June 2022 as well as supporting Anna Meredith on her November 2021 UK tour and at the Barbican at the end of April 2022. Her music has regularly been played on BBC radio 6 music and BBC radio 3.
Carmel also performs with other artists with mostly backing vocals, live electronics, guitar and keys. She has performed as part of Bunny Hoova’s band since 2018, including a live session on Marc Riley’s radio 6 show and multiple European and UK tours. She also plays guitar for and has toured with Marco Woolf.
Carmel studied composition with Gary Carpenter at the RNCM in Manchester, and is now an associate member of the college. Outside of electronic music she has written concert hall commissions for ensembles including Liverpool Philharmonic ensemble 10/10, Manchester Camerata, Laura Bowler, Birmingham Contemporary Music Group, Das Neue Ensemble, Galvanize Ensemble, Equilibrium Quartet and more.
Carmel is also one half of Bothy, a group looking to create sustainable working and rehearsal spaces for musicians in Manchester. (Please do get in touch if you would like to know more. Musicians / space owners / developers / anyone who’s interested.)
